I have a 98 chevy 1500 4x4. Today I went out to start it and it cranked over fine but no fire I let go of key, I thought eng was stopped turnded key and starter grear ground alittle. Repeated starts some times purduces a pause in eng cranking when I stop cranking it might back fire slightly. It was dry and 42 out this morning. I am in the process of putting new plug wires but now it raining out. 6 months ago I replaced the fuel pump. Truck had no symtoms proceeding today. I have no chip in my Ignition key. I do most of my own basic repairs, brakes, starter, water pumps ect. The only tools I own are wrenches. Any old-school suggestions for this old-school driveway mechanic?

Check to make sure you are getting spark and fuel to the engine. Check cap, rotor and coil wire

Have new plug wires on, nothing has changed, pulled rotor cap cleanded off points, no change in performance. Also tested to see if I had spark took #1 spark plug out and got spark while cranking against block but still no fire, it backfires sometimes when cranking over, could it be my timing jumped a tooth and how would I go about figuring that out without having to take it in
