Car started overheating and cut off in middle of traffic. When I start the car the key will turn, but car wont start and you hear a loud bang. I've already changed the spark plugs and the water pump and car still wont start. I keep hearing that it could be the fuel pump, fuel filter, or Cadillac converter. How do I find out what the problem is without coming out of pocket for un needed parts. Also if it is the converter where is it located on 98 Buick century.

Can you describe the loud bang you hear when trying to start the engine? Also, can you tell where it is coming from? Finally, is the starter cranking the engine?

If you smell gas, something tells me you lost spark to the plugs. I need you to check that and let me know what you find. If you need directions, visit our homepage under the DYI section. There are directions there.
