Check the gear linkages for excessive slack and if it is not a fault with the linkages, you could have a fault within the transmission and that woud entail a transmission rebuilt which can cost between 1$1 - 2.5 k.

Just to add to this one most of those transmissions dont need a rebuild or to even be removed to repair. The main reason for a repair on those transmissions is a worn pressure regulator bore in the valve body. Or a broken pressure regulator damping spring. So do you have delay in reverse or no reverse? Also do you have reverse when its cold? What do you mean its loose? What feels loose?

I took it to auto prior to purchase and they took a look did a diagnostic and said vehicle was in excellant ok actually great.

I pulled off the center console and took a peak it wasn't the shift linkage it was a cable I reaatached and called auto zone for part and I was informed it was $161 for the cables neccessary for the repair

I tried the dorman repair it only lasted a short time so I used this one and has worked for over 6 monthes now. In the link it tells you how to patch it up till the new part arrives.

So whats going on with the car?You said you needed answers asap I gave them to you. No you have me in suspense lol. If the cable is broken like I asked you dont need to buy a set of new cables that repair I gave you for the link works great. Also replacing the cables isnt very fun to do I heard the dorman shift cables wernt that great I read the reviews on the quality. Those are probably the ones that auto zone is getting. Anyways trust me those cables arent that fun to change. I have replaced a ton of those cables when I work at the saturn dealer.I got really good at changing them but for being your first time and diyer your going to hate. Let me know whats going with the car so I can help you out.
