What's wrong with the car if the starter won't catch and the starter works?

Its either excessive clearance between the fleplate and starter drive pinion or the overunning clutch is slipping/voltage drop problem

If the starter spins, but, won't kick out the pinion gear, still possible starter/solenoid issue. Are you saying the starter won't crank, using the key? What about your security system? Check the starter circuit. Usually the purple wire at starter solenloid S terminal should be hot with key in the crank position. Any testing, make sure the tranny is in park or neutral and the e-brake is set.
