My service engine light is on and it starts blinking when I reach about 40mph. What does that mean?

The check engine light indicates that the car's computer has identified a problem. Since it is flashing, chances are you have a misfire. What I need you to do is take the vehicle to a nationally recognized parts store and ask them to scan the computer for trouble codes. Once I get that information, I can guide you as to what should be done next.

Most of the parts stores will scan it for free unless you live in California. They passed a law that prohibits them from doing it.

Let me know what you find. Also, the symptoms you notice when driving.
