car not shifting into 3rd or 4th gear that I can tell, rpms go all the way up

Is it starting in first or second? If it is only using 2nd gear, it is in limp mode. If it is shifting from 1st to 2nd, chances are you have a bad shift solenoid. Has the check engine light come on?
