run a short distance & go dead

I have a 96 Saturn SL2 and it will run a short distance & go dead. After sitting for a while it will start & run for approx. 4/5 miles & go dead again. Also the fan motor isn't coming on & it is idling high. Will turn over but not start & fan motor not coming on. It will start & go short distance & go dead. Will start up & go short distance before going completely dead again (will turn over but not start).

Just to add to this one sounds like you could have a bad coolant temp sensor.Do you have any codes?So the battery isnt going dead?Also do you ever have to hold the gas pedal to floor to start it?
