Never heard of that size engine in a full-size van, but your description sounds exactly like the way crankshaft position sensors typically fail. They become heat-sensitive and fail when the lack of air flow allows engine heat to migrate into the sensor. Normally the Check Engine light will also turn on and a related fault code will be set.
