My car stopped suddenly yesterday and wouldn't start back. The engine cranks and then it starts for a second and then shuts off. I have a 1995 subaru justy. Before it stopped, I heard a backfire noise come from the back and when it did stay on for a second, the battery warning light stayed on until it shut off again

You need to check/test to find out what is missing, (fuel, ignition or mechanical) causing the non starting.
