My 95 has a 96 engine and a 97 transmission. Runs in safe mode (3rd gear only)

I was told the TCU needed to be replaced with one from a 97, so we purchased and replaced that, but still runs in safe mode. Just trying to figure out what to do next. Any help please !

Was the ECU upgraded to 96 specifications?

That I am not sure of, the engine was replaced before we purchased the car. I had no idea we were getting into more mess then before. Is there an easy way to check that?

Yes. Find the part 3 on the ECU and call a Mitsubishi dealer.
