my car started shaking like a flat tire but there wasn't one. worse at higher speeds

Have the tires inspected for a broken belt. You CAN do this yourself, but if you run your hands around them watch out for ends of the steel belt wires sticking out which is common with that problem. They really smart when you poke yourself on them. Pat your way around rather than sliding your hand over the tread.
