'98 ML320, 230,000 miles-Transmission works fine for 15 or 20 miles, then when gets hot, won't shift into higher gears (about 3000 RPMs)

This could be an electrical problem, you really need a trans tech to do a diagnosis on this, there are to many variables to just assume any remedy.

I know exactly what you are referring to my vehicle was doing the same thing but it just so happened to my Catalytic converters was bad, all 4 of them. The thing about it is back at catayltic converters a very easy to spot they get a extremely red hot on When they cool down they look like they are just coming out of a house fire like a burnt copper. They a bit on the pricey side. All 4 of my cost me one grand and make sure to get all of the oxygen sensors change with these catalytic converters.
