Car losing power and accelerating on its own

My car will run just fine and than without warning I lose all ability to accelerate. I got nothing under my gas pedal. I have placed the car in park and it will sometimes die and sometimes it will reve itself up . I am at a loss. any ideas?

Check for trouble codes first. The erratic idling could be due to lack of coolant in system or a faulty IAC.
