When running hot, after an hour or more, under acceleration, engine 'cuts out' or 'lurches' losing power momentarily. This 91 golf engine is installed in an 84 Vanagon Westfalia. VW mechanic can't seem to fix. Any suggestions?

What fuel injection system is the 91 golf engine using?

Digifant Injection or CIS injection?

If you don't know, take a picture of the engine bay and post it here so I can see.

Once I know what Fuel Injection System your engine is using, I can take a guess as to what the problem might be.

Could be a distributor hall sensor signal that is cutting out. Does the tach bounce when this happens?

You'll need a multimeter than can check frequency to check the signal from the distributor hall sensor.

Other possibilities:

- temperature sensor
- ECM relay
- fuel pump relay (loss of power to injectors)
- bad ground (corroded connection)
