1991 Ford Explorer wont shift gears

My ford explorer wont shift from 2nd gear to drive I have even tried to manually shift it with the gas pedal it acts like it wants to but it just wont do it I need to know whats wrong and how to fix it

Make sure the linkage from the shifter to the shift arm on the transmission is connected and has not moved out of place. Check the transmission fluid level on level ground with the engine running. The trans fluid should be red & full. If all of that is good then the problem is most likely the transmission itself.
