WHY WILL THE CAR START BUT ONLY RUN FOR A COUPLE SECONDS

1989 Pontiac Firebird • 130,000 miles

Looking at an 89 Pontiac firebird to buy. Had to put gas in it and get the battery charged a little bit. After all that tried to start it but it would just crank over. After letting it charge longer it finally started but only ran for a couple of seconds. I know it don't have a chip in the key to kerp it running. Already asked the guy about it and said it didn't have one. So why wont it saty running after started?

I think it may be related to another issue. I looked and there is not an, "Immobilzer" which is part of an alarm system that cuts the fuel pump off when a car is being stolen. So I am giving you a walk through diagnostic to help with the problem. When you get to the section about pulling codes or if you need special tools to do a fuel pressure test. Advance Auto or Auto Zone will pull codes for free and loans out specialty tools for free.

Use the link below to get to the diagnostic;
