Jeep YJ Ignition switch Problem

How do you replace the ignition switch on a 1988 yj with tilt steering. must the steering column be removed? The "start" function does not operate...temp I have installed a puch button jumper that will work so I know it's the ignition switch or an adjustment of rod...but may as well replace the switch while at it...advice please.
