I have a 1987 Accord with 78,000 orginal miles on it. The problem I am having is the wierd idle. IT is a carb not fuel injected. When I start it in the morning it needs me to pump the gas to get it to start or if I dont it takes many cranks till it runs. Then when I drive it the car seems ok but at stops when it warms up the idle seems to fluctuate from 700 to 1000 and just runs choppy. Sometimes even shakes the car. But this only happens at a dead stop. I have changed cap, rotor, wires and plugs, ran sea foam through it. Still does it. I had a mechanic look at it and he says its just how accord are from that age. Well I know thats not true. I was told to check the pcv valve and that was ok. I have sprayed the carb with cleaner many times and its gotten better but still bad. I even tried to trace out the vaccuum lines but there is about a million of those so unless there is a specific one I have no clue. I do see an egr valve...maybe that?

Please give me an answer or something to chase down.

thanks

Have the choke opening setting checked, also the air/fuel mixture and curb idle speed check, also the EGR valve

If you look around the card, I believe you would notice fuel stains, especially under the accelerating pump. The pump seal tends to leak and when parked overnight, the float chamber would run dry causing the difficult starting in the morning. Servicing the carb and rectifying the leak should be the first priority. Have the valve clearances checked. Any cylinder that has tigh valve clearance would not run well causing the fluctuatiuon in idling speed and so does vacuum leaks.
