1986 Pontiac 6000 oil light comes on

Oil light keeps coming on and the engine makes a pinging sound.

Question is the oil light on when its running? If so SHUT IT OFF ha.
Could be a couple things
check your oil level. If its full that's good but you probably have a problem with the pump because that ping sounds like a part of your engine not getting enough oil. If you operate it like this it will eventually fail. If there's no oil in the car then fill it back up to the full mark, in that case your light would have been on from it being low and that's good it means your sensors working. Then you would look into why its loosing oil. If its not pouring out then its burning off. May need to change your coolant. In addition there may be a fault in your coolant maybe a thermostat. Lastly I would take it in and have it looked at because that noise isn't going to fix it self and its better to get it repaired now than when it gets more expensive. Try not to drive too far.
