1986 Ford Mustang C4 Transmission won't shift 2nd to drive, have to let off gas a little and shift manually, what is the cause? Trans is clean and new fluid and filter, governer spins freely?

We are going back a few years. Is this the factory transmission for this vehicle? If not, is it truly run by hydraulic pressure? If that is the case, there has to be a problem in the valve body. Have you taken it apart to check for dirt, broken springs?
