Battery continues to run until dead

My 1984 Volkswagen cabriolet is having issues. When I turn it off, the battery continues to run, until dead it at the terminal. I have changed the ignition because I thought it had something to do with that.

its been doing this for the longest time. Is there any hope for it.

I owned a couple of those vintage cars way back. battery dies is what your saying when left overnight?
