The transmission is most likely the same on that the truck came with. What you need to do is this. Look at the transmission pan. Take a picture of it if you can. Go to the parts store and ask if you can see pictures of the different trans pan gaskets. Match yours up with the picture and you'll know which one you have. Chances are they just replaced the engine and the original trans is still there. Also, in the early 80's the bolt pattern for the engine and trans to match were almost all the same for the V8

It's a little hard to tell, but I think it is either an E40D or a 4R100. If I am correct, it will have a total of 20 pan bolts. I have to be honest. If I am correct, that is a 4 speed trans with OD. I don't think that is the original trans for the truck. They must have changed it with the engine. Your truck (if I remember correctly) came with either a C4 or a C6 three speed automatic. Check the number of pan bolts and let me know. Also, the C4 had 11 pan bolts and the C6 had 17. Perhaps that will help.

I hope this helps.
Joe

That points to the C6 (which is a great trans). What I need you to do is this. Go to the parts store and have them show you a trans pan gasket for a C6 trans. See if it matches yours. Honestly, it could be the angle I'm looking at it, but it doesn't look like a C6. Do you remember if it shifted 3 or 4 times?

The only thing I can think of is a C6 with a locking converter (OD). Try what I said with the gasket and let me know what you find. We'll figure this out one way or another.

That doesn't upset me. I have two kids of my own. I would question things too.

I have been working on vehicles for over 30 years. This site has been here for several years and the questions are all answered by certified technicians. We answer over 10,000 questions per month. What makes your question unique is the fact that things were changed in the vehicle before you got it. Therefore, the transmission could be different too (which I think it is). The funny thing is that it looks like the 4R100 but you said there are only 17 bolts holding the pan on. If you could see a pan gasket at a parts store, you could match it up and then you would know.

To answer your first question, ASE master certification with 30+ years experience. Believe me. I wouldn't have spent this much time just trying to fool you. My posts are usually answered with one to two replies. I'm trying to help. This is just a hard one because we don't know what the prior owner did and I'm not there to actually see the trans.

Ok thats great thanks. And it is quite complicated lol, when WE got the truck it had putty as the door sealant and the brakes were rigged but the guy before us bout it like that, it basically looked like we pulled it out of a junkyard, now if it had a paint job, new grill and rear bumper wit some dents pulled out, it could be a show truck, me and my sis hav replaced the whole interior ourselves and done the engine work and replaced it to. Everything on the truck is new all the way down to the brakelines except frame, axles, shocks, transfercase and transmission. Idk its pretty freaken crazy, should we just get a 86' 4 speed auto 4x4 trans to match the engine year and b done wit it. My sis has even asked her friends and they look at her like what?

If you plan to replace the transmission, I would find the trans and transfer case from the same year make and model. That way you know you have what is needed.
