I thought we sorta had a long distance relationship goin' on your last post!

Let's sorta go over some stuff. You must answer here, and not start a new question each time.

I may be able to help you with this

When you let out on the clutch, is there any noise, or does the Jeep sorta want to "lurch forward" even a little bit. Did it do do this, just before, it will do nothing?

This may not be your rear-end or differential

I'll tell you what to look for, when you respond with answers

I am having this same problem with an 83 CJ7. The jeep suddenly starting lurching forward with a grinding/thunking sound going up a slight incline. After that, 2WD doesn't work at all. It will move in 4WD, but I'm pretty sure it's working as front wheel drive. Any help is very appreciated!

OK BOSS,

THIS MAY HURT A LITTLE BIT. BUT YOU MUST DRIVE ON!

1ST OF ALL,

THANKS FOR OWNING "THE MOST AWESOME" MACHINE EVER MADE BY MAN!

THANKS FOR COMING TO SEE US, SEEMS I ONLY SEE A CJ EVERY 3 WEEKS OR SO. IN THE LAST FEW DAYS, I'VE GOT ABOUT 5 IN MY CYBER GARAGE RIGHT NOW!

HERE'S WHAT I WANT YOU TO DO

TELL ME ABOUT YOUR ABILITIES---TOOLS---YOUR JEEPS HISTORY. CAN YOU DO THE DIY ON THIS WITH HELP FROM YOUR PALS. I HATE TAKING STUFF ELSEWHERE.I TOO AM A DIYer, STILL GOING TO THE SCHOOL OF "HARD KNOCKS".I PROMOTE DOING STUFF YOURSELF, AND IF I HAD, HAD, SOMEONE TAKING MORE TIME "EXPLAINING" STUFF TO ME, I MIGHT NOT HAVE HAD SUCH A HARD TIME FINDING OUT THIS STUFF ON MY OWN!

I TAKE IT YOU HAVE SORTA BEEN READING SOME OF MY STUFF, AND NOW YOU WANT A "DOSE" TOO.I HOPE YOU CAN UNDERSTAND MY "CRUDE" "RURAL ROUTE" COUNTRY BOY 'SPLAINING!

ON TO THE POSSIBLE "OUCH"

LETS SNATCH THOSE CAPS OFF OF BOTH SIDES OF YOUR REAR WHEELS.

I'M TALKING ABOUT THE "HAMMERED ON" COVERS THAT NORMALLY COVER UP THE BEARING NUTS AND STUFF. ON OTHER "SUB-STANDARD VEHICLES"

IF YOU HAVE "PERTTY CENTER CAPS" IN YOUR WHEELS----REMOVE THEM AS WELL

NOW RE-INSTALL YOUR WHEELS---YOU SHOULD BE LOOKING AT A BIG OLE NUT, IN THE CENTER OF YOUR RIMS

THIS IS WHERE YOUR POSSIBLE "ENVIOUS-WANNA-BE" PALS COME IN!

YOU NEED "ONE PAL" STATIONED AT A WHEEL---A SECOND PAL AT THE OTHER MIGHT SPEED UP THIS TEST. ONE WILL DO!

THE ALL FOUR WHEELS HAVE TO BE ON THE GROUND

NOW JUMP IN YOUR AWESOME VEHICLE AND CRANK IT UP

LET'S GET INTO 2 WHEEL HIGH

I WANT YOU TO "GET ON THE GAS" A LITTLE MORE THAN NORMAL (NOT TRYING TO DO A BURN OUT)

THEN LET OUT ON THE CLUTCH A LITTLE FASTER THAN NORMAL

YOUR JEEP MAY MOVE. YOU CAN TRY FORWARD AND REVERSE

WHAT YOUR BUDDIES ARE WATCHING FOR IS:

THE BIG NUT SPINNING---BUT NOT IN SYNC WITH WHEEL ROTATION

SOMETIMES THE WHEEL NEVER MOVES, BUT THE NUT SPINS---SOMETIMES THE NUT SPINS AND THEN "CATCHES" AND THE WHEEL STARTS TO MOVE

NORMALLY.I HAVE NEVER SEEN BOTH NUTS SPIN, JUST ONE OR THE OTHER

THESE NUTS HOLD THE HUBS ONTO THE AXLE SHAFT. THE AMC JEEP AXLES ARE CALLED 2 PIECE AXLES. THEY WERE POORLY THOUGHT UP, AS MANY PEOPLE HAVE HAD THE PROBLEM OF THEM "SPINNING FREELY"

THESE AXLES DO NOT HAVE A KEY-WAY (LIKE EARLIER JEEPS). THEY RELY ON THESE CRAPPY SPLINES INSIDE THE HUBS, THAT CUT THEIR OWN "GROOVES" INTO THE SORTA TAPERED AXLE. WHEN THE BIG NUTS ARE TIGHTENED "CORRECTLY" (250 FT-LBS)

EVEN PROPERLY INSTALLED THEY CAN FAIL---MANY PEOPLE WHOM HAVE REPLACED THE AXLES AND HUBS USUALLY DO NOT HAVE THE PROPER TOQUE WRENCH AND THEY ARE NOT TIGHTENED RIGHT

EVEN "SHOPS" DON'T DO IT RIGHT SOMETIMES. THEY DO NOT CARE ABOUT YOUR BABY, LIKE YOU DO.I CARE ABOUT IT TOO, OTHERWISE I'D BE PAYING MORE ATTENTION TO THE "SWAMP PEOPLE" THAT ARE ON TV NOW!

NOW, IF YOU FIGGER OUT THIS IS YOU ISSUE---LET ME KNOW, THERE ARE A FEW WAYS TO CORRECTLY APPROACH THIS. WHICH MAY SAVE YOU TIME AND BROKE STUFF ALONG WITH A BUNCH OF WIRTY DORDS. THE HAD WAY, WAS MY 1ST EXPERIENCE FINDING AND TACKLING THIS

LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU DO. WITH YOUR JEEP. WHAT IS IT'S "MISSION STATEMENT" THIS MAY SWAY MY "FIX" RECOMMENDATIONS

WHAT WERE YOU A DOIN' THE LAST 50 MILES PRIOR TO THIS HAPPENING

I WILL AID YOU IN PARTS FINDIN' ALSO. BEST DEALS I CAN COME UP WITH

POSTING PICS HELPS ME TOO---I CAN WRITE STUFF ON 'EM AND POST 'EM RIGHT BACK. SHOWING YOU PROCEDURES. I HAVE MADE MANY JEEP FIX PICS FROM MY OWN. I HAVE YET TO MAKE SOME OF YOUR ISSUE, SO YOUR PICS MAY AID OTHERS IN THE FUTURE

I STARTED WITH THIS, 'CAUSE I HAVE SEEN THE SAME SYMPTOMS SO MANY TIMES!

SHOULD THIS NOT BE YOUR PROBLEM. WE WILL CONTINUE ON!

BEFORE I LEAVE YOU TO PERFORM THE TEST

LATELY, I'VE BEEN ASKING THIS QUESTION

YOU WILL NEVER SURPASS ME. YOU MAY EVENTUALLY EVEN UP WITH ME!

. DO YOU "REALLY" LOVE YOUR JEEP!

YOUR TURN

I just bought an 81 CJ7 Laredo 4 cylinder engine 4 speed transmission. It went straight to the shop for a 4” lift and wheel package. I try to drive it out and there’s no power. It won’t move. It starts up and idles fine but won’t drive. I go to put it in 4 Lo, and it moves slightly. Any help greatly appreciated.

DUKEBOY4LIFE,

Keeping with 2carpro tradition and S.O.P

We need to start a whole new question!

I will be really happy to assist you, as Jeep CJs are my cup of tea,

So

When you submit your question, in the title or in the question, please ask for me (CJ MEDEVAC or The Medic)

Here's a link to getting it going.

https://www.2carpros.com/questions/new

In doing this, it keeps 2carpros search records obtainable for others to easily find and read specific problems and fixes. Mixing in with this post will make things harder for the next guy. Sorry for the inconvenience.

I will see you soon when I find you on the new question list!
