Do I have a compression problem?

Do I have a compression problem in my 1980 mazda rx7 engine if the rpm's top out at 5500 when I floor it in 2nd gear? It stops accelerating and then when I let off the gas pedal and allow the gear to shift into 3rd the car begins to accelerate again? The transmission is a 3 speed automatic. How do I fix it, I don't have a rotary mechanic anywhere near me.
