MY STALLS AND WILL NOT RESTART AFTER 3 OR 4 HRS. OF DRIVING OFF RAOD ON HILLY TERRAIN

I can get someone to pull me and I leave it in gear for a couple of miles before it fires back up.

TAKE A CAN OF STARTER FLUID WITH YOU TOO

AFTER YOU CHECK FOR SPARK. IF YOU HAVE SPARK

SHOOT ABOUT A ONE SECOND BURST OF STARTER FLUID DIRECTLY DOWN THE THROAT OF THE CARB

ATTEMPT TO FIRE HIM UP. DOES IT TRY TO BUST OFF. OR IS IT STILL "DRY" OVER AND OVERS. NO SPITTING OR SPUTTERING. IF WE GET POSITIVE RESULTS FROM THE STARTER FLUID. WE WILL INVESTIGATE FUEL ISSUES

I HAVE MANY PICS AND CAN GUIDE YOU THRU CHECKING THIS STUFF. LETS NOT GET TOO FAR AHEAD AND COMPOUND THE PROBLEM!

IF WE DON'T HAVE SPARKRIGHT OFF THE BAT WITH WHAT YOU HAVE POSTED THUS FAR.I THINK THE 1ST COMPONENT I WOULD GET TESTED IS THE IGNITION MODULE

DO NOT PRY ON THE CONNECTORS WITH SCREWDRIVERS---GRAB THE WIRES ON EITHER SIDE AND JUST STEADY-PULL HARD TO DISCONNECT IT

HAVE IT TESTED 5-8 TIMES (NO MATTER WHAT THEY MIGHT SAY)

WE ARE LOOKING FOR A PASS--EACH TEST

THIS IS THE MACHINE (1ST PIC AT ADVANCE AUTO PARTS---THIS MACHINE CAN BE USED FOR MANY DIFFERENT MODULES. THE CORRECT CONNECTOR NEEDED TO TEST YOUR MODULE IS ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE MACHINE IN MY PIC.I LAID IT THERE MYSELF!

I AM ALSO ASSUMING THIS PUPPY IS PRETTY MUCH STOCK AS FAR AS THE ENGINE GOES. LET ME KNOW WHAT HAS BEEN CHANGED. PICS ARE NICE!

LET ME KNOW WHAT KINDA VACUUM DIAGRAM NIGHTMARE YOU MIGHT HAVE TOO, I CAN HELP YOU MINIMIZE IT DOWN TO JUST WHAT IS ACTUALLY NECESSARY

I should have gave a little more detail when this happened I did put a rag in the throat of the carb to choke it and it does want to fire a little.

TELL ME EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENS WITH YOUR JEEP---BEGINNING WITH HOW DOES IT RUN AND PERFORM NORMALLY?.....WHAT HAPPENS WHEN IT "GLITCHES".....DETAIL

79 jeep cj7 258ci, carter bbd carb, I've owned this jeep for about a year now I tuned it up when I got it new plugs, wires, fuel filter, rebuilt carb. I've not added any mods to the engine, ignition or fuel system.
No camara atm but it's just the plain old stock cj7 under the hood.
How it runs right now? It is running just fine but when I get it off road after 3 or 4 hrs it just stalls can smell gas like it is flooded out. I stuffed a rag in the carb to cut the oxygen off and it sometimes starts back up for a little while and eventituly it stalls and will not restart with the juice I got left in the battery anyway. Twice now when I was getting towed out I would leave the clutch out in high gear and it would take 2 or 3 miles of the motor turning over before it would fire back up.
I do have the bacic tools and volt meter to work on my jeep and I have enough knowledge to locate any part that maybe failing.

I've also check the fuel line to the gas tank it looks fine the next thing I'm going to do is drop the tank and check the pick up tube.

LET'S NOT DROP THE TANK YET

I GUESS IT'S STILL INNA COMMA?

0) KEY ON--WHAT IS YOUR VOLTAGE AT THE POSITIVE SIDE OF THE COIL. SEE LAST PIC

1) LETS MAKE SURE WE HAVE THE CORRECT COIL. SEE PIC 1

2) RESULTS FROM STARTER FLUID SQUIRT IN CARB?

3) REMOVE #1 PLUG WIRE AT THE PLUG--WEDGE A NAIL OR PAPER CLIP INSIDE THE BOOT BETWEEN THE METAL RING AND THE RUBBER. HOLD THE PAPER CLIP 1/4 INCH AWAY FROM SOMETHING BARE METAL ON THE ENGINE---HAVE YOU PAL CRANK IT OVER 5-10 REVOLUTIONS. DO YOU HAVE A NICE BLUE "POPPING" SPARK JUMPING TO THE GROUND?

IF YOU HAVE NO SPARK---REMOVE THE IGNITION MODULE AND HAVE IT TESTED AS IN MY VERY 1ST ANSWER TO YOU (ABOVE)

4) REMOVE DISTRIBUTOR CAP---CRANK ENGINE OVER. DOES THE ROTOR BUTTON TURN?

5) IS YOUR FUEL SYSTEM SET UP LIKE THIS W/ A FILTER "1 IN"---"1 OUT" TO CARB (CENTER PORT)---"1 OUT" TO FUEL TANK RETURN LINE? DISREGARD MY REGULATOR AND MINI FUEL PRESSURE GAUGE. SEE 2ND PIC

6) LOOK AT YOUR VACUUM LINES. ARE THEY ALL CONNECTED AND SERVICEABLE? IF THEY ARE A MESS. YOU ONLY NEED 2-4 VACUUM LINES TO RUN THE ENGINE, UNLESS YOU HAVE POWER BRAKES, THEN YOU HAVE ONE MORE!

7) I CAN SEND PICS OF HOW TO MINIMIZE THE VACUUM LINE MESS DOWN TO THE BARE NECESSITIES IF YOU WANT ME TO.

DO YOU HAVE THE CORRECT PCV VALVE. PIC 4 IS A 1979, MINE HAS A VACUUM CAP ON IT, NORMALLY THEY COME WITH A PLASTIC PLUG TO PLUG OFF THE PORT MY CAP IS ON, THIS WOULD ELIMINATE THE NEED FOR THE VACUUM CAP

8) CONTINUITY TEST FOR DISTRIBUTOR PICK UP----SEE PICS 4--8. DO WE HAVE BOTH GROUND AND PICK UP W/ GOOD CONTINUITY?
