I have a '75 dodge w100 with a 318 and a 727 transmission. I have never had the kickdown linkage hooked up, but I recently heard it is hard on your tranny to not have it. Anyway first is it necessary to hook it up? Second, how is it supposed to be set up and adjusted? Also, the truck is a beater so I don't want to put in a kickdown cable or anything else that would cost extra.

Yes need the the kickdown hooked up ther eshold be a lever on the trans that the linkage is hooked to and it looks like it's hooked correctly on engine. With engine warm remove the linkage to trans. Hold carb idle so it doesn't go off of idle. Thenpull kickdown rod forward as far as it will go. See if it will hook up to linkage it should just barely touch. Then lengthen the rod two full turns and reinstall on carb.
