Bought new rotors and inner and outer bearings. Tried to install the rotors but the rotor will not go on the spindle far enough to get the nut or carter pin installed. Second set of bearings ordered and on a dry fit the bearing only goes within one inch of the dust shield on the steering knuckle. What is my problem?

Hi and thanks for using 2CarPros. Com.

Check to make sure the bearing seal fits over the shoulder at the end of the spindle. Also, make sure the inner cup of both inner and outer bearings are installed correctly. If the bearings are correct, the seal fits over the shoulder of the spindle, and the rotors are correct, it has to fit. Also, make sure the rotors are the same as the ones you removed.

Here are the directions right from Alldata for replacement. Make sure you followed all directions. Additionally, I attached an exploded view of this system. Check to make sure everything is together in the proper order.

1. Apply an approved high temperature front wheel bearing grease to the spindle at the inner and outer bearing seat, shoulder and seal seat. Also finger apply a small amount of grease inboard of each bearing cup in the hub/disc assembly. Pressure pack the bearings with a grease machine or hand pack them. Ensure grease is worked thoroughly into the rollers, cone and cage.
2. Install inner bearing, (apply an additional quantity of grease outboard of the inner bearing), and seal.
3. Install rotor.
4. Install outer bearing, washer and nut.
5. Torque nut to 13-16 Nm (10-12 ft lb) while turning the wheel assembly forward by hand.
6. Loosen nut to a just loose position, then back nut off until hole in the spindle aligns with a slot in the nut.

CAUTION: Do not back the nut off more than 1/2 flat.

7. Install cotter pin and cap.
8. Install caliper. See Brake Caliper / Service and Repair. See: Brake Caliper > Procedures
9. Install wheel and tire assembly.
10. Lower vehicle.
11. Depress brake pedal.

Thank You Joe! I measured the new rotors with the old rotors. Old bearings with the new. All was the same so I again went and installed the rotor as described and it went on. All is well. I guess I was not holding my mouth correctly on my first try. Thanks again for your help.

Hay, Don. Glad you got it. When they don't want to fit, sometimes the seal does not properly line up on the spindle. Regardless, I am glad you got it together.

Take care and let us know if you have questions in the future.

Happy Labor Day!

Joe
