Vehicle won't start, says starting disabled, and has a little lock symbol. Thought it was the starter, but after changing it is when the lock symbol appeared, still won't start. Please help.

Hi,

Is the light that you are getting? If so this is the theft deterrent system.

Are you using a valid key to start the vehicle? Meaning has this key worked to start the vehicle before? If not, you need to get a valid key for the vehicle.

If the key has worked in the past, try just unlocking one of the front doors with the key because it appears your theft deterrent system is active which is why the vehicle is not starting.

Here is a guide that talks in more detail about the security systems:

Let me know the detail behind this and if this doesn't work, we can dig further. Thanks

I have not tried unlocking the front door with the key. Will that usually help? Also, the lights that you get when you open the door (ceiling lights) stopped working, can't roll window down, no radio etc.

That could all be related to the security lock out and yes, unlocking the doors with the key is one way to disarm the security system. If this doesn't work, then you may have an issue with the key. Do you have a second key that you can try?

Yes, we tried both keys already and none of them work. They even have pk3 (a chip inside) on it. In the morning I will try to unlock the front door with the key and let you know an update.

Okay. If the cluster says starting "disabled" then take a look at the highlighted portion of this attachment.

Either the key is not working or the BCM is not receiving the signal from the key transponder. This means either the key is the issue or the exciter module that picks up the signal from the key and sends it the BCM.

The exciter module is part of the ignition switch.

Is there any history to this issue? Meaning did you just go out one morning and this didn't start or has it been sitting for a while? Did you just buy it?
