Engine Performance problem
2001 Volvo XC70 All Wheel Drive Automatic 144000 miles

My engine rpms surge and wane to nearly a stall when idling. The rpms range from about 500 to 1200. When the rpms drop to 500, the engine acts as if it wants to stall, then the rpms increase to about 1100 to 1200. What could be causing this.

Sounds like you have an issue with your electronic throttle module. Call Volvo and give them your VIN # to see if you are still covered by the 10year/200k mile extended warranty on the throttle. Of coarse they will need to diagnose the vehicle first and run some tests to verify that the throttle is faulty. You would need to pay for diagnosing if it is not an internal fault with the throttle. But if it is, then you will not need to pay for anything.
