My daughters car has a blinking check engine light. It goes off when at ideal but the car runs a little ruff at ideal also. It goes off when she presses the brake. A googles search suggests that this is a "Emission System" problem. Is there a diagnostic process I can follow to isolate the trouble part (if so using what comsumer tool) or is the process one of replacing a part and then checking to see if that solved the problem? If this is a "replace and see" method is there a list of probable problem parts starting at the most probable problem part & going to the least probable problem cause and what is that list? Years ago I would have opted for the O2 sensor first but these days I am not sure.

A flashing CHECK ENGINE light means you have a severe misfire that can damage your catalytic converter. First thing is first. Pull the spark plugs out. If they are not Volvo plugs then go and get Volvo plugs. Any other plugs and you will get misfire. Trust me on this one. I did not believe it myself at first. Second inspect the coils. If they are split on the sides replace them as well. If all that is good then replace the ignition coil harness. Inside the harness is a capacitor that goes bad. Not a common problem but it happens. Let me know what you find.
