Rear driver side door lock will not lock / unlock by switch on drivers door or using key in driver's door. I can hear the mechanism in the door attempt to engage but door does not lock or unlock except manually using the "button" on that door.

Repair by shop is cost prohibitive, as vehicle is now 9 years old.
1) How do I remove the interior door panel on the door with the faulty lock to attempt to repair the lock? Other information to help me get to the broken lock.

2) Is this a common problem with S80s with a procedure for a common "fix"? Is the problem likely to require an entire new mechanism?

3) Is this a common problem where replacing the mechinisim with a used part(s) would probably also fail in relatively short order the same way the current lock failed?

Your car is 9 years old so parts are going to fail eventually. You will need to replace the door lock assembly. to remove the door panel remove......
the surround for the inner door opener
the cover for the inner door opener
the screw under the cover
the 6 door panel press clips.
Carefully tap the bottom of the panel to release it.
Pull the upper edge of the panel inward.
Disconnect the connectors.
NOTE: BEWARE Upholstery for the door may be falling apart so if you want to fix that you will need a hot glue gun.
To remove lock assembly remove the 3 torque screws on the side and drillout the rivet below it to move the glass guide rail to the side to remove the lock assembly. The rivet is steal so use a good drill bit made to drill out steal. You also need to disconect some hinges before you remove the 3 screws. Ataching picture on removing door panel.
