what is an oil trap box? would this cause a whining sound and my check engine light to come on?

Yes a torn diaphragm in the oil trap box will cause a whistle and a check engine light for fuel trim problems. Call Volvo and set up an apointment. You could be covered by a 10 year/150k mile extended emissions warranty.
