My adult daughter's1995 Volvo 960 sedan has over 190,000 miles on it. It is a 6 cylinder engine. She has been having a bit of trouble shifting. The check engine light has been on for about a week or so and a transmission light has come on intermittently. She had set up an appointment scheduled for next week to have the transmission checked.

Last night as she was driving the car made a noise like the bottom of the car dropped out. All the lights on the dashboard came on and it stopped. They turned it off and tried to start it again but it would not start.

Can anyone give me a guess as to what it might be?
We are trying to determine whether to have the car towed to a repair shop or a junk yard.

Thanks,
J-

sounds like the transmission locked up. You can take it to a garage and get an estimate. If the estimate is higher than what the car is worth, I would think about getting rid of it, but that is up to you. If you do decide to get rid of it you could always advertise it for sale instead of just junking it.
