Transmission problem
1986 Volvo 240 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

Ok im having a problem with my transmission it seems to be not changing into 3rd gear I believe once I get to 40mph it no longer changes gear. It is possible though to push it up to around 55-60mph and it will pop into 5th gear I guess it is. Im just wondering if you know what the problem could be is it something simple to fix or will I need to rebuild the whole transmission and if yes can you maybe give me a rough estimate on what you think it will cost me to fix. I appreciate any info you can give me thank you

Hi Philoso,

Is there a 5th speed? I believe it is a 4 speed model.

Since the gear cannot change to 3rd, it is either a stuck valve body or the clutch is faulty.

You need a pressure test to confirm if it is the valve or clutch and is not going to be an easy fix.

The amount for repair would vary on the condition of the trans.

Could you give me a ballpark figure out what that might cost if I took it too someone to do it? Im just wondering if the car is even worth fixing. Any kind of guess on price would be appreciated.
Thanks
Sam

Hi Sam,

It is not easy to guess the price as the extend of the damage and condition of the trans is unknown.

I would estimate it as between 1.5 to 3 k.
