1984 Volkswagen Van intermittent engine starting failure

1984 Volkswagen Van 6 cyl Automatic

This usually happens after driving for a while then turning off engine to gas up etc. I can hear a fast clicking noise. Battery is fine and new. Could it be something to do with a coil?? for the starter motor??

You are having ignition problems, check your distributor makes sure everything inside of it is correctly, what is happening is the computer is overheating and shutting it down, it will do this a few times before you burn up the computer. Then you will be sorry.
