I recently had my fuel tank tank replaced on my 2003 VW Passat 4Motion per a recent recall. When I got it back from the dealer I noticed a loud vibration (like a humming noise) at high speeds <70 MPH coming from the rear end. The sound and resulting vibration go away when I drive the car below 70.

The dealer confirmed they had to remove the drive shaft in order to replace the tank, however, they claimed to have put it back together properly. This did not occur prior to the service.

Any advice you have on this would be greatly appreciated as I am going back and forth with the dealer as we speak.

Sincerely,
Stephen

Hi stonna,

Something is definitely wrong with the driveshafts or wheel balancing to cause the vibration.

I would remove the driveshafts and reinstall them again. Check for stiff joints due to lack of lubrication.

Thanks for getting back to me. I took the car back to the VW dealer (for the 3rd time) and they took the drive shaft apart, rotated it 180 degrees and reattached. Everything is back to normal.

Sounds to me like they did not put it on right the first time.

Thanks again for your help,
Stephen
