SMELLY AIR

Hi

I have a 2001 VW JETTA VR6. After having the fuel filter replaced a few weeks ago, I turned on the ac as it was icredibly hot here in FL and the smell was SOOOO bad.
I have NEVER had that happen before and couldnt figure out what I ran over if anything.
The VW sales rep said I need to get some thing done to it that would cost around $150
I let it go thinking ok I will tolerate the smell and turn the ac on when the florida heat nearly kills me.

My? Is this. Could it be from the new fuel filter? How long will it take for the nasty, horrible smell to go away? ALSO, how do I get better gas mileage? Should I invest in the little bottles of fuel enhancers they sell at AutoZone?

What does it smell like? Is it almost a sweet sort of smell or a heavy smog smell or etc.

I have a 2001 Jetta that has smelly air coming from the vents too. I think it's the 5 year old plastic or foam insulation heating up in the Florida sun that is creating the death smell. Kinda smells like a dead rodent until it cools off, then it seems to be bearable, or I'm just getting used to it
