My car is stuck in park

I own a 1998 vw beetle it is stuck in park the automatic shift lock isnt working is that a sensor or what? The dealer cant seem to see it for a month can someone help me please?

Yes it is that stupid shifter lock, ithe only way you can try to get it out of gear is to either turn the key to the AUX position and see if it shifts out of it. Or just turn it to the first detent and then try it. The only thing is that the car will only start in Neutral or Park so you'll have to jiggle it while starting in neutral and then kick it to drive when started. I've done it before it gets the job done till you get the the dealer. Let me know.

Hey I fixed it myself it was the brake light switch on the brake it is a purple part it wasnt locked into place so I fixed it yay!
