Golf temperature gauge

I purchased a 2000 Golf a few months ago used. There are approximately 75000 km's on it. The previous owner appeared to take good care of it and did some work to it. While in our possesion we have replaced the timing belt. The problem we are having is with the temperature gauge. Just recently it easily over heats while on the highway, and once stopped will drop back down to normal. Also, while at normal temperature the warning will come on for no reason. After a few moments the warning light will go off and stay at normal temperature. What is going on?

Hi,

I'm assuming it is 2.0L. Right? Was the water pump replaced when the timing belt was done? Could be a temperature sensor. Are you seeing coolant comming out of the coolant bottle when the gauge says that it is overheating?

Aslo, check the radiator fans. I have found that they will fail w/in 3 years. They will either not come on or the fan hub bearings fail causing the fans to jam up.

Let me know if this is the solution.

Im going to say its your water pump too. I had the same problem with my passat. Check the front left side of your car and look for water or antifreeze. Also check your antifreeze level
