I have a 2002 VW Jetta GLS, 2.0 L with 40,000 Mi. Today the car would start, but I can not get it to shift out of Park. The "automatic shift lock" light is on along with a a light "EPC". Is there anything I can do other having it towed?

I'd start by listening to the brake lock solenoid at the shift lever to hear if it's clicking when you press the brake.
After that, I'd pull all the trim off the shifter surround so I could verify the brake lock and key lock mechanisms are letting the shift lever move out of Park.

On most cars you can 'manually' disengage the shift lock with a long skinny screw driver if you need to move the car. You could probably even unscrew the solenoid temporarily until you trace out the problem.

Sounds like brake switch to me though. They did have a recall for this defective item.
