Transmission problem
1996 Volkswagen Front Wheel Drive Manual 173000 miles

I have a 96 VW Jetta 2.0 Manual. When I bought the car I did know the clutch was slipping. I thought it would make it to spring and then I was goin to put a new one in. Then when driving the car shifted from first into second the clutch pedel went to the floor and couldnt shift. The car has a cable style clutch so that rules out anything with hydrualics. I let the other guy in the garage work on it because I dont anything about german cars. First thinking was pressure plate was bad possible reason for for slipping. Put a hole new clutch kit in the car put back together and still have the same problem. Push the clutch in and no neutal. Looked at all the mechanical working stuff on the outside everthing is working properly. So brings you now to the inside of the tranny. What is in there that would brake that would not allow the through out bearing to be working. Please help I called for a tranny for this car found a reman for $1250 but im not spending that much on the car. I think it is something simple that can be fixed.

Hi there,

Make sure that the cable is adjusted correctly. There should be only a few mm clearance. Can you move the clutch fork by hand so it engages the pressure plat? Is the clutch fork pivot still sitting in the fork properly. The mechanical clutch is very simple, look at each component carefully and you should see any problem.
