I just bought a 1971 vw bus transporter and I want to start doing some on the work myself. It needs an oil change, a tune up and a pulley adjustment. My questions are about those 3 things. What all goes into tuning an old vw bus up? Should I go ahead and purchase some tools to work on it? If so what tools and how do I go about tuning it up. The pulley from what I hear is an easy fix. Its a ne pulley, its just loose. Apparently these."Shims" are the problem, but it could possibly be the generator although I don't think it is. How can I tell and fix this?

Tune up is just like most other cars. Yoiu will need a couple of metric sockets to remove the oil filter and screen. They are in the middle of the engine under neith. Remove the bolts and drain the oil. Then put a clean the screen and replace the gasket when putting back together. It is a little tight to get at the spark plugs. Gap them and replace or put new ones in. Check the belts for wear and replace if neccessary. You can use some carb cleaner to help clean any carbon built up. Check the throttle cable and lube. On the busses they get dry and do rust and wear out. Make sure you lube the clutch cable and heater control cables.
