Transmission problem
1969 Other Volkswagen Models 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual unknow miles

I have rebuilt a 69 vw convertable and when I put the motor and trans together and got the motor running, runs good. When I try to shift to first from neutural the gears grind. If I stop the engine it shifts fine. I thought I had moved the adjusting nut on the clutch lever up but do I need to tuighten it more? My friend thinks it is the shifting tube has come loose and needs to be rewelded in the tube from the shifter to the trans?

thank you for your time

The problem is that the trans input shaft is turning while trying to shift gears. This means either the clutch is not releasing or the pilot bearing[in gland nut on flywheel]has piled up. Clutch malfunction possibilities are numerous.A loose frame tube is one posibility. Others are:cracked clutch pedal, Oil on clutch disk, faulty pressure plate, Wrong p/olate and disc match. Their are other possibilities, but see if these ideas solve your problem
