From what I understand, if I timing belt brakes while an engine is running it can either badly damage the engine, or do little or no dammage, although it will stop the engine, depending on the design of the engine.

Do you know how my engine is designed? Do you know what would happen to the 2 liter four cylinder engine in the 1999 VW Jetta I just purchased if the timing belt were to snap? I do now know if the belt was ever replaced. I have taken a look at it and it still has VW printing on it, I am not sure if the printing would survive the 113,300 miles it has if the belt were original, I just do not know.

Thanks!

Hi klig, Welcometo 2carpros and TY for the donation

Your 2.0 liter engine is not an interfrence engine-the pistons won't touch the valves in case the timing belt breaks

The next timing belt inspection is due at 120K miles -I suggest you replace it
