I have a 1998 VW jetta GT 2.0 5 speed transmission 133000 miles. The other day I began experiencing a problem with my transmission. I am unable to put the trans into first gear in the normal gearshift lever position. I can get first gear when I shift the lever into the reverse position but I cannot get reverse at all. Otherwise I can drive the car normally. What can the problem be?

Hey I had the same problem with my 1996 jetta. The problem is actually a very simple one but when you take it to the "rip-off" mechanics they will tell you its the clutch or the transmission.
The shifter bushings and the ball on the relay shaft are worn out. They cost about $60 if you buy them online.
