1998 Volkswagen Jetta Alternator

The alternator went bad on the car so I replaced it with a refurbished OEM from the local parts wharehouse. After install I i checked voltage supply at the battery while running and the alternator was not charging the battery (12.8 and dropping) I exchanged it for another one and installed it again. Same thing happend with the exchanged one but this time the alternatorr was whining very loud. I check output directly at the B+ terminal on the alt. While the engine was running on battery power. No voltage reading at all. What am I doing wrong? Any ideas? Could I just be that unlucky and I got 2 bad alternators?

The same thing is happening to me! I've gone through 3 alternators and 2 batteries. My cables look fine too. Have you figured it out yet?
