1997 Volkswagen GTI 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual

Hey Mike! I have the 1997vw golf that still wont start. Everything still pointing to the engine speed sensor. The thing is, I have gotten at least 5 sensors (used) and none worked. Do I need a brand new sensor also could I have damaged them by connecting the wires wrong?
Next thing Mike, I am impress with the online manual. Its not comprehensive and specific for the model to which I signed up for, not showing how to connect the wires is a perfect eg. Where can I get an authentic vw manual

With sensors it is almost always better to get new as very few mechanics actually have the specs let alone the tools to correctly check them. Besides most new sensors come with a warranty which is useful if you have something that is killing sensors.

As for repair manuals, check one out from your local library or go to a parts store, most have a decent selection for this year frame.

It was the coil all along. Tell me if I am assuming wrong. There is a return signal that the ecu requires from the coil in the crank sensor system that was'nt happening, hence car would'nt start, but because the 1.8l does uses a crank sensor it did'nt require that return signal. With the coil breaking down half way it was still able to start the 1.8l but not the 2l
