Hi guys, I usually experience high revs (3000-4000rpm) during initial start up or when the engine has been shut down for long. The high revs soon end if I rev up the engine even more for sometime or drive off till I engage 4th gear. My engine is 1.8L 16V jetronic DOHC.

cheers

Sounds close to the problem an idle air control valve could give you. Is there a strong gas smell when you start or is everything but the rpm normal?

I am having the same problem. Took apart the air box and sprayed the maf sensor down with maf spray. And changed the air filter, but the problem still persists. There is a strong gas smell on startup.

Sounds like you have a leaking injector or have a bad cold start system. The cold start system could be anything from a relay, bad injector, degraded programing, bad pressure regulator and so forth. I suggest a cleaner and then start with the least expensive thing. Usually a relay. Also do a quick search for vacuum leaks.
