Heater problem
1997 Volkswagen Golf 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual n/a miles

I started my 97 Golf the other day and turned the fan to 2 to defrost the windshield. When I returned 15 minutes later the blower was not running. I've never had any issues with it before. I looked to see if it was a fuse but it checked out ok. I've read about resistors being bad and needing replacing. I hope it is not the motor gone.

Is there anything I can do myself or is it a job for a mechanic. I'm on a limited budget and so I have not taken it to a mechanic as of yet. In my experience the mechanics in my town will go for the larger more expensive all out replacement if it is found really to be something small. Not very honest mechanics.

Thanks.

There are a few things you can look at.

1) Pull the resistor and see if it is fried, it will be obviously burnt. Before this try testing to see if the motor will run on all the speeds, if one or more is missing but at least one still works it is a very good chance it is just your resistor.

2)If you are mechanically inclined enough you can get to the blower motor and hit it with 12 volts right off the battery for a few seconds and see if it turns on, if so the motor is good an you have a problem with your resistor or fuse or relay.
