this morning the car started but while on my journey the battery light stayed on, when i arrived home and turned engine off i tried to start it again all i get is a ticking noise.

Battery probably ran down due to the alternator not doing its job-get the alternator load tested.

your battery terminals couldve losen or coroded over time and its just not getting a great connection. try taking them off, cleaning them with a wire brush, and putting them back on farley tight. its free and worth a shot. then again im no expert but i have had this experience before on my old subaru
